Have you ever thought about what happens when you flush your toilet? Most homeowners do not think about just how much money they waste having their sewage transported to a city treatment plant. One way to save yourself some cash while helping the environment is to invest in a septic system. If you have not considered this option for your home and property, here are some do's and don'ts to think about today and everything you need to know to get started.

What Is A Septic System?

A septic system is a process where wastewater from your home is naturally broken down on your property. These systems consist of the main sewer line, a septic tank, and a drain or leach field. Where the magic happens is inside of the septic tank itself. Most septic tanks are either made out of concrete, fiberglass, or hard plastic. Sewage from your home enters the tank through what is called the inlet baffle. Inside the tank is a bacteria that breaks down sewage into sludge and liquid sewage. The liquid sewage is then pumped through an outlet baffle into a drain or leach field. This outlet baffle also works as a stopper to prevent scum and sludge from escaping. It is not, however, fault-proof. If you treat your system poorly, it will not save you from the ramifications.

What Not To Do If You Have A Septic System

A septic tank's job is to break down sewage and then release the processed liquid sewage into a drain or leash field. If too much sludge or scum gets into a system, problems will occur. Now, sludge is not directly a bad thing. As long as you clean your system once every three to four years, sludge overflowing will not be a problem; however, scum is a different story. Scum is anything that will not break down, like dental floss, feminine products, grease, and baby wipes. As long as you avoid flushing these things down your toilets, you won't have too many problems maintaining your sewage system.

The Importance Of Regular Maintenance For Your Septic System

A sewage system should be able to take care of wastewater for a long-time, but it is not something you can leave and never worry about. As sludge builds up in systems, maintenance is required. If you hire the right company, they will schedule a visit to check your tank for issues and clean it if needed. If you do not have your tank cleaned for more than a few years, you could start running into some serious clogging and other problems. To fix these problems, you will have to hire a professional and will most likely end up with a hefty repair bill.
